Hong Kong: Facts & Stats

CULTURE

Traditions:

Various customs and traditions from different religions have been accepted in Hong Kong. The culture of Hong Kong can best be described as a foundation that began with China, and became more influenced by British colonialism. Despite the 1997 transfer of sovereignty to the mainland, Hong Kong continues to hold an identity of its own.

Despite the relatively modernized way of life, Chinese superstition still plays an integral part of the culture. Concepts like Feng shui are taken quite seriously. Expensive construction projects often include the hiring of consultants that are believed to make or break a business. Other objects like bagua mirror are still used regularly to shield evils. Numbers in Chinese culture also play a role in people's everyday life. Numbers like "4" (because of its similarity to the Chinese word for "(to) die") are avoided when possible by believers. Other rituals like not using scissors on Chinese New Year are still around.

Celebrations:

The different local festivals and other holidays reflect mostly the Buddhist rituals and customs of Hong Kong; for example, Tuen Ng Festival or the Dragon Boat Festival, which is one of the most popular festivals in Hong Kong and Festival of the Hungry Ghost.

Tuen Ng Festival or the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Double Fifth, is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. In the West, it is typically celebrated with dragon boat races and competitions being the focus of the activities.

Meanwhile, Festival of the Hungry Ghost is a Chinese tradition believed that ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm. The Ghost Festival is on the 15th night of the seventh lunar month.

Alcohol:

The legal drinking age for alcohol beverages is 18. But some bars/pubs have the limit at 21.

Sports and Hobbies:

A huge variety of sports are available in Hong Kong, provided most notably by YWCA and YMCA. There are also several other local sustained organizations who strive to help Hong Kong residents identify sports that are not broadly advertised enough. The Hong Kong Government is also known for its proactive approach towards sporting events prior to the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

Horseracing is the most popular sport among local people. Race meetings, at which vast sums of money change hands, are held from September to May, Saturday or Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening.

All golf clubs and their facilities in Hong Kong are for members only, although visitors can play for a limited time at an extra cost. Major tournaments are held at the renowned Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, which also allows visitors to join as day members. The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau public golf course, beautifully located on an island, was designed by Gary Player.
